Read: Up-to-Date Recommendations
The article Initiation of Breastfeeding from UpToDate.com provides a summary and recommendations for content reviewed in Modules 1 through 3. Use this article as both a supplement to the webinar and as a knowledge check for what has been discussed so far.
Use: World Health Organization Infant Growth Charts
As discussed in the Module 3 video, infant weight gain should be assessed using the WHO growth charts, as opposed to those published by the CDC, until the age of 2 years. The WHO growth charts better reflect appropriate weight gain in the breastfed infant. Compare the growth charts used in your practice to these to ensure growth is being assessed appropriately.
Explore: Baby Behavior Tools
As noted in Module 3, a change in infant behavior can cause concern for an adequate milk supply. It is important to understand normal changes in infant behavior patterns over time, discuss this information with families, and provide reassurance regarding these normal changes. The Human Lactation Center of the University of California, Davis, provides handouts and videos related to normal baby behaviors from birth to 6 months.
